A pair of early Bauhaus beech wood and two-tone woven seagrass rope armchairs, by Erich Dieckmann (1896-1944), circa 1925-1930. The use of quality hardwoods, rope and cane matting moderated the austere geometry of the designs and this pair with the two-tone woven seagrass rope is an early example. Erich Dieckmann was one of the most important Bauhaus furniture designers. In 1921 he went to Weimar and enrolled in the Staatliche Bauhaus and became deputy head of the furniture workshop after Marcel Breuer. At the Bauhaus Erich Dieckmann worked on developing seating in wood and tubular steel. Dieckmann's most important pieces are his standardized, and simply constructed wooden furnishings. The structure of this seat furniture is stringently geometric, with frames constructed of wood with a linkage of armrests and chair legs by a continuous runner construction. Measures: 53 cm wide by 78 cm high by 64 cm deep, seat height 40 cm.
