Modern abstract art tapestry by Dutch artist Liesbeth Wiersma in red and black 1969 has been traditionally woven in wool by hand on a loom in a technique called Kelim. The artist explores the boundaries of abstract expressionism through this art form. It is woven in two parts and sewn together. Tapestry is a weft-faced, in which all the warp threads are hidden in the completed work, unlike most woven textiles, where both the warp and the weft threads may be visible. The word Kelim originated from Turkey which means ‘pileless textile’. Kelim as a technique describes the surface of the textile as a flat-woven tapestry. kelim is a slit weave this shows how the weft threads of the red and black are wound back from the color boundary, leaving a slit. The tapestry is easily mounted with stick-on Velcro (included) to the wall.
