Remarkable pair of brutalist lamps by California Sculpture Harry Balmer manufactured by the Laurel Lamp Company in the 1960's. Balmer’s raw oxidized steel geometric finishes is reminiscent of the renowned American abstract expressionist sculpture David Smith (1906 – 1965). The lamps stand like distorted exploding abstract columns on a cuboid black plinth. The hand welded and cut out geometric shaped steel using an oxyacetylene torch to retain their smelted rough raw edges, with variations of poly-chrome dark surface patinas. The strong slanted wall of the square cream shades add to enhances the strong visual silhouette of the lamps especially when lite.
