The pair antique gilt and ebonized mirrors with a central cartouche above of a leaf motif. The frames are made of carved wood and gesso a thin layer of gold leaf is then applied over the surface. Set into the frame the aged oxidized mirror gives a sparkly, crystalline appearance behind the glass. France was renowned mirror producers in the 18th and 19th century! A new technology progressed in the 19th century, using silver nitrate to replace the highly toxic mercury. These gilt mirrors are a fine example of the new method of mirror-making of the time.
