One from a series of a porcelain dinner service designed on the theme of the Circus by the celebrated Italian designer Gio Ponti (1891 –1979). He was an Italian architect, industrial designer, furniture designer and artist. Gio Ponti was appointed artistic director in 1923 for Richard Ginori, founded in 1735, Italy's per-eminent manufacturers of porcelain tableware, based in Milan. This tray or platter with decorated handles depicts a Circus tight rope walker in the centre, a clown, performing seal and other circus related motifs circling the plate. "Richard-Ginori Pittoria Di Doccia" in Gold rectangle with triangle on each end "Richard Ginori" green back stamp "Made in Italy" green back stamp "1407E" in red back stamp the manufacturer's mark.
