Pair of 1950s Black Metal Chandeliers by A.B. Read for Troughton & Young

Designer Ab Read 1899-1973 studied metalwork at the Royal College 1919-1923. He worked for Bagnes French lighting in the 1920's and later designed this lamp for manufacturer Troughton & Young in 1948. This light was exhibited in the Festival of Britain in 1951. Read is seen as a Pioneer in Lighting design. His interest in Gropius led him to visit the Bauhaus.  The metal shades are attached to a chrome plated ring with chrome plated machine joints. A brass ring holds the cords together and leads to a brass ceiling rose. These cords can be shortened 30-40 cm. The shades measure width 21 x 23 cm and height 17 cm.  The shades have been re-sprayed.
Excellent. The chandeliers are re-wired to British standard and fitted with regular bayonet bulbs..
